HOWARD B. PARZOW, AUCTIONEER, IS PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE... Furnishings & Items from the Estate of the Yourtee Farm (Greystone Farm)
Greystone Farm sits atop a hill overlooking Brownsville, Maryland. It remains in the hands of the Yourtee family, who purchased the property from Henry Boteler in 1811. The original stone cabin built by the Boteler family still forms the core of the home, now surrounded by later additions.
During the Civil War, the Yourtee family hosted General George B. McClellan, the first Commander of the Union Army, along with Union soldiers. The house served as a strategic base during key battles that ultimately forced General Robert E. Lee to retreat from Maryland back into Virginia.
In the years following the war, the estate became home to Dr. John Tilghman (1841–1926), who provided medical care throughout Washington County while residing at Greystone.
Ownership of the estate then passed to Justice Leon Ryno Yourtee (1879–1956), a Washington County Judge who also made the estate his home.
It was later inherited by his son, Colonel Leon Ryno Yourtee Jr. (1916–2007), an Army Engineer. After retiring from military service, Col. Yourtee dedicated his time to remodeling and enhancing the Greystone estate, which has remained in the Boteler-Yourtee family lineage since the mid-1700s.
